Read the First Three Waves and Track the Enemy Jungler
Early ganks in top lane rarely happen by accident. Most junglers plan a top-lane gank around the first three waves, especially if the enemy top laner has strong setup, such as a Renekton stun, Camille hookshot, or Darius pull. The first step in countering an early gank is to read the game before it happens. If the enemy bot lane leashed their jungler, that jungler likely started bot side and may path toward top after clearing their camps. If the enemy top laner leashed, the jungler probably started top side and will likely gank bot or mid first. This information alone can tell you whether you should expect pressure around 2:45 to 3:15.
Wave state matters just as much. If you are pushing hard without vision, you are volunteering to be ganked. The top lane is long, and once the enemy jungler appears behind you, running back to tower can take several seconds. A safer plan is to keep the wave closer to your side, let the enemy top laner push if they are impatient, and use your trinket ward around 2:45 near the river entrance or tri-brush depending on your side. If you have no ward and the enemy jungler is missing, assume they are top. Also watch the enemy top laner’s behavior. If they suddenly play more aggressively, walk past your minion wave, or let you push for no reason, they are likely setting up a gank. Countering the gank starts with predicting it before the first auto-attack lands.
Preserve Key Cooldowns and Set Up a Safe Escape Path
Many top laners die to early ganks because they used their mobility or crowd control to trade right before the jungler arrived. If you are playing Jax, do not burn Q and E just to poke if the enemy jungler can be nearby. If you are Camille, save E for escaping over a wall or stunning the jungler. If you are Fiora, keep W available to parry a key stun or slow. If you are Garen, save Q to remove slows and W to reduce burst. The general rule is simple: if you do not know where the enemy jungler is, your escape tool is not a trading tool. This is especially true before level 3, when most top laners lack full defensive stats and when junglers have enough damage to kill you in one rotation.
You should also plan your escape route before the gank begins. Ask yourself: if the jungler comes from the river, which way do I run? If they come from tri-brush behind me, can I flash over a wall, or should I walk through the river? If the enemy top laner has crowd control, standing near a wall is dangerous because you can be stunned or knocked into the jungle. Keep your health high enough that you are not an easy dive target. A top laner at 40% health under a slow-pushing wave is a free kill for most junglers. If you are already low, give up CS, recall, and use Teleport to return if the wave is in a bad spot. Losing a few minions is far better than dying, losing a full wave, and giving the enemy top laner a permanent advantage.

Fight Back with Minion Advantage and Terrain
Running is not always the correct answer. If you have a large minion wave, fighting inside it can turn an early gank into a disaster for the enemy. Early minions deal meaningful damage, and a wave of six or more minions can easily outdamage a jungler who is tanking them. Use your minions as a shield against skillshots and as a source of damage. If the enemy jungler is squishy, such as Nidalee, Elise, or Kha’Zix, they will melt if they commit into your wave without support. If the enemy top laner is the bigger threat, focus them first while using minions to block the jungler’s path. Do not simply run in a straight line if you can fight around terrain, because the top lane alcove, river walls, and brush can buy you precious seconds.
Terrain is your best friend when countering a gank. The alcove near top lane can be used to break line of sight, force the enemy to split, or set up a flash over the wall. If the enemy jungler dives you under turret, make them pay by attacking them while they take turret shots. Champions with knockups, stuns, or displacements can pin the jungler under turret or push the enemy top laner away from the wave. If your own jungler is nearby, ping for a countergank and delay as long as possible. Do not chase a kill into fog of war after surviving the initial burst, because the enemy mid laner or support may be rotating. If you can kill one enemy and escape, that is often a winning trade. If you cannot kill either, prioritize survival and wave state over revenge.
Reset the Wave, Recover XP, and Prevent the Next Gank
Once you survive the early gank, the game is not over, but the next few minutes decide whether you stay relevant. If you are low on health, recall immediately. If the wave is pushing toward you, you may be able to stay for a few minions, but only if you have vision and your escape summoners are up. If you have Teleport, consider using it after recalling only when the wave is crashing into your tower and you would otherwise lose a large amount of XP. If you killed the enemy top laner, push the wave into their tower to deny them gold and XP, then look for a safe recall or a plate if the jungler is showing elsewhere. If you died, do not panic. Freeze the wave near your tower, ask your jungler to help break a freeze if needed, and play for XP rather than risky trades.
Preventing the next gank is about information and wave control. Keep the wave on your side of the lane whenever possible, and ward deeper than the river brush if you can safely do so. Track the enemy jungler’s pathing after their first gank. If they started bot and ganked top, they will likely recall and path toward dragon or mid, but they may also camp top if you are behind. Change to a blue trinket if your team needs vision, and buy control wards when you can. If you are behind, build defensive components instead of forcing damage items. Communicate with your team: if the enemy jungler is top again, your jungler should take dragon or invade bot side. Surviving an early gank is a small victory, but resetting the wave, recovering XP, and denying the next gank turns that small victory into lane stability.
